Congratulations, you’ve made it through the initial application process, and you’ve booked an interview. You’re one step closer to landing your dream job as an administrative assistant.

To help you present your best self, we’ve compiled a list of some questions to expect in an administrative assistant job interview.

Time Management

As an administrative assistant, you not only need to manage your personal calendar expertly, you’ll need to keep one or more senior staff members on time. Expect questions asking you to demonstrate previous examples of good judgment as it relates to time management. Did you previously work on a complex task or project? Use that as a real life example to show off your top-notch time management skills. What about handling multiple items on your to-do list? Be ready to offer up your best suggestions on how you prioritize. Demonstrating your ability arrange – and often rearrange – things during your day for maximum effectiveness not only tells the hiring manager you are flexible, it tells them you’re capable of handling whatever comes your way.

Soft Skills

A hiring manager will want to know about your interpersonal and communication skills. What about working in client-facing roles (working with the public)? Or do you prefer to working with in-house colleagues? These soft skills are essential for an administrative assistant. Being able to navigate multiple relationships daily is an integral part of the job.

Hard Skills

Every administrative assistant role is a little different depending on the needs of each company. But one thing remains constant across all industries and businesses: to be a successful administrative assistant you must possess solid “hard skills.” Listen for questions that give you a chance show off your technical aptitude. Reassuring your interviewer you are a whiz with technology that includes Microsoft Office Suite, WordPress and database management – skills you’re ready to prove on an assessment test – will put you on the top of their short-list of desirable applicants.

Problem-Solving Skills

At its heart, an administrative assistant’s role is that of problem-solver. Your supervisors depend on you to help them get their jobs done. Listen carefully to the questions asked during your interview, because most of them will center around your ability to solve one or more problems. Find ways with each question to demonstrate strong problem-solving skills.
