The holidays can be a busy, stressful time for your staff. In addition to the usual demands of work, they also have additional tasks such as gift shopping, cleaning for company, socializing with family and friends, childcare when kids are home on break and more. It can be tough to balance all that comes with the holiday season, as well as daily tasks on the job. So what can you do to help your workers maintain focus from Thanksgiving through the new year?

Five ways to help your workers stay motivated during the holidays

You can help work move along as smoothly as possible with the following tactics:

1. Allow flexible workdays.

Whether you allow flexible work hours or the ability to work from home, employees will be grateful for this valuable opportunity. Flexible scheduling can help them accommodate work plus everything else that comes with the holiday season.

2. Provide treats.

Coffee, donuts, cookies, pizza or a catered lunch… no matter what you choose, free food is always welcomed with open arms. It gives employees a chance to take a quick break, has a snack or a meal, and get right back into their work.

3. Give a holiday bonus—in January.

With the promise of more money looming, you can encourage your staff to continue to work hard through the holiday season tempts them to slack. They’ll be pleased when come January, they find their hard work paid off.

4. Have a contest.

A work-related contest (with prizes) is a great motivator during the holiday season. Choose a contest where prizes are directly linked to goals that are easily measured, such as a number of projects completed, number of claims processed, etc. It’s also a good idea to make the prize something desirable, so employees are encouraged to go for the gold.

5. Be Jolly.

Above all, you can motivate your employees through your own joyful attitude. Smile, say thank you, ask them how they are and keep it light. Your kindness will remind your staff that you’re human. Despite the demands of work, the holidays are still a time for laughter, happiness, and goodwill.

Make a plan now

There’s no time like the present to decide on your plan for holiday productivity among your staff. So review what you can do to keep your workers motivated, then take steps to get your plan in place—when will you begin, how will you communicate and what is your timeline for implementation? The more you plan ahead, the better your plan will work.
