It’s exciting to start a new chapter in your career! And if you’ve decided to begin work as a general laborer, you can take some steps for an easier transition to your new job. This way, you’ll be prepared to do your very best from day one.

Five things to know before starting a general labor job

It’s important to take care of YOU. When you’re safe and healthy, you’ll be ready to work hard and give 100 percent. Be sure to follow these five tips to do your best work:

1. Wear safety equipment and follow safety rules.

These are meant for your well-being. Listen closely when your manager explains all safety procedures and always remember to wear the proper equipment. If yours gets damaged or broken, let your manager know right away so it can be replaced. If you have questions or concerns about a procedure, always ask!

2. Eat breakfast.

This will help you maintain energy, prevent fatigue and avoid bingeing on high-fat, high-sugar foods throughout the day. The best breakfasts include fiber and lean protein, which keeps your body full and satisfied until your next meal. Healthy breakfast choices include eggs with wheat toast, yogurt with granola and fruit, or a yogurt and fruit smoothie.

3. Take regular breaks.

Your mind and body need time to relax and rejuvenate. Always take your scheduled lunch and 10-minute breaks. During your break, do something fun like listening to music, taking a walk, chatting with co-workers or playing a game on your phone. Have a healthy snack to re-energize, such as yogurt with fruit, cheese, and whole wheat crackers, or an apple with peanut butter. You’ll return to the floor refreshed and ready to go.

4. Stand and/or stretch at regular intervals.

Remaining in one position or repeating the same motion over and over can fatigue your muscles and joints. So in addition to your breaks, remember to stand and stretch on a regular basis during your shift.

5. Get enough sleep.

Sleep is vital to good job performance—it helps your focus, concentration, memory and immune system. Plus, when you get enough sleep, you won’t feel sluggish during your shift. Most people need 6–8 hours each night, but everyone’s different. You’ll get the best sleep in a cool, dark and quiet bedroom with a good mattress and cozy blankets. Keep pets and electronics out of your room for the best night’s sleep.

Your employer cares about your well-being

Your new company wants you to be safe and healthy. If you have any questions, always ask your manager. If you’re not sure who to go to for help, check with your recruiter for more information.
