‘Tis the season for the annual holiday work gathering. Though it’s meant as an opportunity for employees to relax, it often gives rise to a minefield of potentially embarrassing moments. No one ever means to say or do something they’ll regret, but you may find yourself feeling nervous or awkward, or just in need of a few hours to kick back and have fun. However, it’s important to remember that a work event—though in the spirt of holiday revelry—is still work. So it’s always in your best interest to maintain yourself as professionally as possible, and follow a few top party-going tips.

Five Christmas party rules to live by

At your holiday work gathering, follow these five dos and don’ts to avoid embarrassment and apologies later:

  1. Do attend. Unless something absolutely unavoidable happens, make plans to attend your work Christmas party. Your boss is kind enough to throw one, so, by all means, be respectful enough to go. It can reflect poorly on your dedication to the company if you don’t.
  2. Do dress appropriately. Though it’s a party, it’s still a good idea to dress with respect for a work situation—so choose an outfit that’s not too flashy or revealing. If it’s a formal occasion, you’ll want to choose a dressy outfit that’s still somewhat professional. If it’s more casual, choose clothes that are dress-down but still in good shape, such as business casual attire.
  3. Do mingle, but don’t gossip. Drinks can often fuel the gossip engine, but you never know who’s listening, who will repeat what, and who will find out what’s been said. To play it safe—just don’t gossip. It helps you to maintain a good reputation with your boss and coworkers.
  4. Don’t overdo it on the drinks. Holiday parties often have cocktails available to add to the social atmosphere. However, overindulging makes it much easier to go overboard and do something you might regret. A good rule is no more than one drink per hour, and with a glass of water in between. But if you feel you’ll have a hard time limiting yourself, you may just wish to avoid drinks all together.
  5. Don’t leave early. This can be seen as rude. Instead, plan to stay at the party until the ending time listed on the invitation. Then, it’s acceptable to say your goodbyes, thank your boss and those who helped plan the event, and head for home.

Have a plan

The best way to maintain yourself at a holiday party is simply to arrive with a plan (such as one that includes the above tips) and stick to it. If you’re close with a coworker, make a pact to keep each other in check. Then, you can enter the New Year with a smile because you have nothing to regret!
