Looking for a new job in the new year? If you’re feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to begin, a recruiter is a valuable partner in your job search!  The process of job hunting—from finding leads, to preparing your paperwork, to applying and getting ready to rock your interview—is lengthy. It may also seem intimidating, especially if you’re fresh out of college, or if it’s been a while since you’ve looked for a new job.

How a recruiter helps

Your recruiter is equal parts job coach and career concierge. When you reach out to a recruiter for help in your search, she will put her expertise to work in finding you a new job. Recruiters provide the following career assistance:

  • Resume review. Your recruiter wants you to succeed just as much as you do. Most recruiters don’t get paid until a placement is successful, so they want to ensure the best choices for clients. Your recruiter will review your resume and offer suggestions for ways to make it stronger and wow a hiring manager.
  • Access to unposted jobs. Many employers work directly with recruiters to fill job openings, and these opportunities are never posted to job sites. So when you work with a staffing agency, you’re accessing jobs the public is not aware of. This helps increase your options of finding the best job for you!
  • Interview coaching. What should you say during an interview and what should you avoid? What are the answers to common interview questions? What is a particular employer looking for, and how can you fill this need? All of this information will be reviewed with you by your recruiter. She will provide tips to help you ace your upcoming interview.
  • Recommendations to employers. Your recruiter will submit your information to an employer with her review and recommendations for why you’d be a good choice for the job. This makes it much easier for your paperwork to find its way to a hiring manager’s desk.
