If you’re having a hard time finding work, relocation can be a good option. Still, moving is a big undertaking, especially if you have a family or currently own your home. Even if your dream job is in view in another part of the country, it’s important to consider some important factors before making the move.

Four things to consider before you relocate for work

Time, money, job stability and happiness are a few of the things you’ll want to consider before you make the decision to relocate. Consider all of the following before you make plans to embark on your journey:

1. Housing.

If you’re single and currently rent, this is an easier decision that if you have a family and currently own your home. You’ll want to consider the housing market in the city of your potential new job: is the rent/mortgage higher or lower than your current city? Is it a buyer’s or seller’s market? Where will you stay while trying to find your new home, and how long will it take? Remember your living situation is a source of comfort and serenity, so choose wisely for yourself and your loved ones.

2. Cost of living.

You might have culture shock if you’re moving from a small town to a big city, or a pleasant surprise if it’s the reverse. Do your research to determine how much you’ll need to make at your new job to live comfortably and whether they cover relocation expenses.

3. Future.

Moving to a new company can provide growth potential for your career—and probably should if you’re uprooting yourself and others. Is the company stable and growing? Will they offer more opportunities than your current job? Will you love your new line of work? These are all important considerations before making a big move.

4. Family.

If you have a spouse and/or children, you’ll need to consider the ease with which your significant other can find employment, or if your new salary will be adequate for both of you. Plus, you’ll want to look for suitable daycare and schools, if applicable.

Make the best choice for you and your family

In the end, the most important question to ask yourself is: do the advantages of this move outweigh the effort and potential obstacles? If the answer is maybe or no, you may wish to stay put. But if it’s yes—you could find yourself en route to the next exciting chapter in your life.
