If you’re looking to move ahead, becoming a certified welder is a smart step. You’ll have a higher earning potential and be in higher demand with employers. This can help you cement your job stability.

How to become a certified welder

You can become certified through the American Welding Society, or AMS, by following these steps:

  1. Review the list of certifications. AMS offers welding certifications in eight different categories, including welding inspector, welding educator, radiographic interpreter, welding supervisor, welding sales representative, welding engineer, welder program and robotic arc welding.
  2. Check the qualifications. Do you have what it takes? If not, how can you get the experience you need to become certified? Welding certification is an important step in proving your value to employers—how can you gain the qualifications you need to earn these credentials?
  3. Register for a certification seminar and/or exam. You can choose to take a seminar prior to your certification exam that includes all the information you’ll need to know. Or, if you’re ready, you can select just the exam. Prices and locations differ based on the package you select. You can also take some courses online, as available.

Consider an endorsement

You can add to your certification by becoming endorsed in a certain welding skill. To become endorsed, simply review the list of potential endorsements and choose one that applies. You can take seminars or online courses to become endorsed and will need to sit for an exam. Prices, locations, and availability vary based on the endorsement you choose.

Another way to boost your welding career

Becoming certified is a strategic step to the next level in your welding career, and the time you spend is an investment in your future. Another way to boost your welding career is by working with a recruiter. Staffing agencies are experts at what they do, and your recruiter will work to understand your career needs and help you find a welding job that fits.
