Four Questions You Must Ask Your Interviewer

An interview is just as important for you as for your potential employer. Why? Because it’s a learning process where you can find out all you need to know about a job. In a way, you’re interviewing the hiring manager just as much as she is interviewing you.

Four key questions to ask

During your interview, you’ll want to find out about the company and position, to make sure you want to take the job if it’s offered to you. For this reason, always ask the following four questions:

1. Why are you hiring?

It’s key to find out whether this is a newly created position or if the job is open because someone else left. And if they left, a follow-up question could be, “Why did the previous person leave?” If this job is high-stress, for example, you will have valuable information to evaluate whether or not it’s right for you.

2. Is there room for growth?

If you’re looking to stay with a company long-term, you may be interested in the opportunity to build your skills and advance to different roles within the business. It’s good to find out up front what the career options look like with this company, or if you’ll hit a “glass ceiling.”

3. How will my individual performance be measured?

What will be expected of you to do your very best at this job? Will you be given regular 1:1s for feedback so you can keep meeting your goals? Will you have numeric goals to meet, quality standards to adhere to, or regular performance reviews? This will give you a good idea of what you’ll need to do to succeed—and if this will work for you.

4. How do you value company culture?

Company culture is important in your day-to-day work life. Will this be a job you love to come to every day? Culture is a popular concept lately and many businesses are working hard to develop a fun and engaging company culture. This can make the difference between your dream job or one you simply endure.

What else would you like to know?

Beyond these four questions, there may be more you want to find out about a company. Google additional questions you can ask. Then, jot down all your questions and bring a pad and pen so you can keep track of the interviewer’s answers.
