The hunt for a new job is not for the faint of heart! And that’s not to mention the energy it takes to complete phone, video and in-person interviews… your job search can be a long and stressful process. But you can take steps to help ensure it goes along smoothly and successfully—helping you find a new job you love!
Five job search tips that work
In the journey towards your next job, use the following to make your efforts easier and more effective:
1. Be sure you have a LinkedIn profile that’s up to date.
Employers and hiring managers look to LinkedIn as their number one source of potential candidates. So you can imagine—if you don’t have a LinkedIn profile it’s almost as if you’re invisible to the hiring world. Setting up your profile is easy. Just start with your resume and use this information to build your profile. Add a professional picture of yourself. Then you can start to work on adding contacts and performance reviews.
2. Match your skills to those required for the job.
To each job you apply, tailor your resume and cover letter to directly address the skills and experience listed in the job description. Your goal is to make it a no-brainer that you’re a great fit for the job. Just be sure not to misrepresent yourself, but by all means, spike out the qualifications that make you a perfect match!
3. Be human and unique.
Businesses want to hire people that are qualified but also likable. So it’s important to let a little personality show through in your cover letter, resume and LinkedIn profile. You can do this through the language you use—it doesn’t have to be stuffy and make you sound like a robot. You can keep your details and descriptions interesting while not losing the formality of the situation.
4. Work with a recruiter.
Staffing agencies are experts at matching qualified job candidates to positions in which you’ll excel. Plus, they have contacts throughout the industry and are aware of both advertised and hidden job openings, as some employers work directly with staffing agencies to fill positions (thus these jobs never get advertised to the public). What this means to you is a potentially shorter job search that yields better results.
5. Don’t compromise your standards.
No matter how long your job search seems to be taking, don’t give up hope that the right job is out there. Never attempt to take any job just to find something. First, it isn’t fair to the employer, as you’ll likely want to leave as soon as a better opportunity comes up. And second, it isn’t fair to you, either. You owe it to yourself to find the best job for you.
