What are your plans for the future of your career? Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? Maybe you’ve recently graduated but you’re not quite ready for your dream job. Or you’ve decided you would benefit from a major career shift. In either case, you may be wondering how in the world you’ll get to where you want to go!

Five ways to get the job you want

It makes a big difference if you have a plan for how to tackle your goals. All of the following can help:

  1. Get your foot in the door. If you’re looking to get into a particular field, but don’t quite have the skills yet, that’s OK. Take a look at what you’re good at and see if you can apply those skills to a different position with the company where you’d like to work. Then, as you learn about your stepping-stone job, you’ll also learn more about the industry and get one step closer to your ultimate position.
  2. Market your soft skills. Many employers and hiring managers will admit, these are more innate than learned. In fact, depending on the job, many employers are willing to hire a potential employee with great soft skills who are smart and can easily learn other key aspects of the job. This won’t fly if you’re dreaming of becoming a doctor or lawyer, but can work in plenty of other fields.
  3. Re-frame your experience. What skills do you need for the job you seek, and how might your work experience thus far prepare you for that next role? For example, if you’re a writer with dreams of being a project manager, think about how you’ve interfaced with teammates and prioritized your work. You may find you’re familiar with aspects of project management in your current job and can highlight these on your resume.
  4. Work your way up. Most of us won’t be hired for a six-figure salary right out of the gate. It’s inevitable you’ll need to work your way up the ladder, so if you’re able to find a position similar to what you really want, but the pay is less than desirable—you may just need to accept that the pay is less. If you work hard, you’ll get there, and earning a little less to get the experience you need may be worth it in the end.
  5. Work with a recruiter. Recruiters are experts at job searches and will work with you to understand your career goals and help you reach your dreams. This includes finding role-adjacent jobs that can get you one step closer to your ultimate goal of THE job.

Stay positive

Great things happen for people who believe they can have what they work for, never give up, and set smart goals for how to get there.
