When you’re in search of a new job, it’s all about impressions. The impression your resume makes (which will lead the hiring manager to call you in), the impression your make during your interview (key, because it’s often in person) and follow-up impressions you can make. You want to stick in the mind of your interviewer for all the right reasons, so when it comes time to recommend a hiring choice—your name is at the top of the list.

How to be Unforgettable in an Interview

When the answer to, “Should we hire you?” is a resounding YES among members of the hiring team,  you know you’ve made a great impression. And your interview is a perfect opportunity. Yes, you’ll want to establish rapport with the interviewer throughout the process, but it’s often how you close the interview that can be the clincher to whether or not you’re hired. So what can you do?

Ask Good Interview Questions

This shows you care and you were paying attention. You’re just as invested in your future as they are—and you have the questions to prove it. Come to your interview prepared with 3–5 questions, including:

  • Why did the previous person leave this job?
  • What skills do I need to excel?
  • What other questions can I answer to help make your decision easier?
  • What should I aim to accomplish in the first three months of this job?
  • In your opinion, what’s the best part about working here?
  • How is job performance measured?

Remind Them You’re Interested—and Why

An interviewer has just shared a lot of information about the job, and it helps to know you’re just as excited at the end of the interview as at the beginning. So reiterate why you’re psyched to hopefully land this job.

Repeat Why You Think You’d be a Good Fit for the Job

It could be your background, your passion, your skill set, or all the above. Based on what you’ve heard about the open position, why would you be an extremely successful match?

Ask About Next Steps

When will they reach out to you with a final decision? Should you reach out to them? Understanding next steps is an important part of the process.

Be Grateful

Thank the interviewer for their time and shake their hand.

Always Send a Thank You Note

It could be via email or a handwritten card—but following up in this way is a must. Never skip this step.
