Have you begun to dread going into work? All of us feel a lack of motivation from time to time, but if you’re experiencing dislike or boredom, how do you know whether the feeling will pass—or it’s simply time for something new? If you work in a job that has attractive perks (maybe plenty of PTO or flexible scheduling?), the decision to launch yourself toward the unknown can be tricky, even scary. But if your job yields very little to no enjoyment, your remaining years until retirement can be bleak.

Three red flags it’s time for something new

When you’re on the fence about whether you should stay at your current job or start looking for a new one, there are some things to consider. The following are three signs it may be time to move on:

1. You just don’t care anymore.

This is one of the worst ways to feel—if you do a good job or a bad job, you don’t care either way. This attitude is not only a sign that you’re ready for something new, but it can also be detrimental to those around you. When you don’t care, it can harm the attitudes and productivity of your coworkers, and possibly cause them to pick up an unfair share of the work. Instead, when you just don’t care, it’s time to find something about which you’re more passionate.

2. You shy away from challenges or additional responsibility.

Your boss is excitedly describing a new project during one of your team meetings, and she asks for input. Coworkers around you are sharing thoughts and ideas, volunteering to take on a portion of the work, and helping to move the project along successfully. But you are sitting back, hoping no one notices you not participating, because the thought of taking on more work is far too unpleasant. And if this sounds like a recent work experience—you’re ready to move on.

3. You’ve stopped planning for the future.

When it comes to learning new things, working towards a promotion or a different position—you’ve simply stopped worrying about it. If you’ve become so disenchanted with your current job that you aren’t even trying to think about your future with thcompany, it’s definitely time to start looking for an opportunity at a new one.

Do these situations sound like you?

If you’ve experienced one or all of the feelings described above, your time at your current job has probably neared its end. You’re bored and feel your days are predictable, there’s nothing else you can learn and nowhere else you can go with your current company. And that’s fine. But even though it may be uncomfortable to move on, it’s something that is probably best for your well-being.
