Safety in your workplace is critical to the well-being of your employees and the good reputation of your company. By keeping your workers safe, you’ll ensure continued productivity and output, helping you meet the needs of your customers. Plus, it’s just good business practice.

Inexpensive ways to improve safety

If you’re worried that instituting safety precautions may break the bank, there are low-cost steps you can take to help make your workplace safer for everyone. Just follow these six workplace safety practices:

  1. Train your employees thoroughly. Short and simple—no employee should operate a machine or tool they’re unfamiliar with. Make sure every worker is trained properly and signs off on the training they’ve received; it can even help to conduct knowledge checks after training. You can also work with your recruiter if you need help bringing all workers up to speed.
  2. Post safety information in key areas. Posters with key safety information hung in appropriate locations throughout your building is an easy reminder for employees to stay safe.
  3. Encourage hand washing. Good health is a top concern to help your employees do their best on the job. One of the easiest ways to help your employees stay healthy, especially during cold and flu season, is to encourage them to wash their hands. It’s important for them to use proper handwashing techniques after using the bathroom, before eating and before touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Post a reminder to wash hands next to all sinks in the building.
  4. Teach proper lifting techniques. Back injuries are one of the most common workplace injuries, and the easiest to prevent. Make sure all workers are trained on proper lifting techniques, including lifting with their legs, only lifting amounts they can reasonably handle, and using lifting aids when possible. Your recruiter is available if you need help training workers.
  5. Be a good role model. When your staff sees you following all safety precautions, it’s motivation for them to do the same. Safety is important for all—employees and boss included.
  6. Remind employees to ask if they’re unsure. As the saying goes—it’s better to be safe than sorry. Encourage your workers to ask questions when they’re unsure about using tools or machines. Give them information about the right contacts to refer to when they need information, such as you or supervisors.

It doesn’t take much to encourage workplace safety

Even when working on a budget, these steps can make it easy to keep your work environment safe for all.

Need to staff up?

Working with a skeleton crew can lead to burned out and overwhelmed employees, creating unsafe work conditions. So, if you’re in need of additional staff, it can help to work with a recruiter to find new employees quickly and easily.
