Are you looking for a new job? The amount and tone of your follow-up can determine your chances of being hired. You know you’re in good shape if you submitted a perfect resume and really knocked it out of the park at your interview. If you got really good vibes from the interviewer and you’re almost positive they loved you, it’s time to get your follow-up just right.

Here’s what you need to do.

Send a thank-you note right away

The easiest way to do with is by sending an email. If your interview was in the morning, feel free to send it that same day. And if your interview was late afternoon, sending a thank you note the next morning is fine. In your note, thank the person for their time and reiterate your interest in the position. Answer any questions you feel you didn’t adequately answer during the interview or provide any follow-up information you promised. Include why you feel, based on your qualifications, you’d be a perfect match for the job.

Get back in touch at the stated time

During your interview, the interviewer may have told you by when they’d be making a hiring decision. Or, they may have said something like, “If you don’t hear back from us by [date], feel free to reach back out.” It’s perfectly acceptable to contact them on or right after these dates if you haven’t heard anything.

Reach out again only if they seem interested

Let’s say you contacted them when they told you to, and the feedback you got was good. For example, “We really enjoyed meeting you, and we’re still trying to make our decision.” If that’s the case, following up one more time to check-in and see where they’re at with their decision is fine. If they seemed lukewarm after your second contact, or never got back to you, it’s best to cut your losses and move on.

The final contact

The last note you can send if you haven’t heard back, or heard you did not get the job is gratitude for their time and consideration. This helps to leave the experience on a positive note and keep you open for future job opportunities with the company.
