How does it feel when you don’t love your job? Not great—you can admit it!

Most of us feel this way from time to time. It’s a sign you might need something new… but what? What’s your next step? And what if you want to completely change fields?

You know, you have options. One you may have considered is a temp-to-hire job.

What does temp-to-hire mean?

A temp-to-hire job is one you start on a “just for now” basis. You’re not yet a long-term hire. But if the job fits for you, and you fit with the company—you just may be offered a long-term offer of employment. You can find jobs like these through temp-to-hire agencies.

Temp-to-hire pros and cons

So what are the benefits of getting a temp-to-hire position?

Basically, you get the chance to decide if the job is what you’re looking for. This is especially good if you want to change fields. You’ll be able to experience what it’s like working in that field, what the company is like, what the hours are like, etc. If it’s not what you signed up for—no biggie. If that happens, you simply move on.

A deal like this one must have a catch—is that what you’re thinking?

True, there’s the possibility you won’t be offered a long-term job at the end of your assignment. But the good news is this: all you’ll need to do is get back in touch with your temp-to-hire company to see about another opportunity. Depending on the field you choose, you may have lots of options.

Should I choose a temp-to-hire job?

That’s entirely up to you!

If you’ve been feeling down or bored at your current job, it feels a lot better to be doing something you like. A temp-to-hire job will give you a chance to find out what you might want to do next, even if you’re not completely sure. It’s a way to “test the waters” in a different industry and get first-hand experience.
