Got an upcoming interview? You can take a few steps to put yourself at the front of the running! How?

It’s very important to learn a little something about the company before the interview day. It shows you really want to work there when you take the time to learn what’s going on!

The good news is, it’s pretty easy to do. All you’ll need is the internet.

Use These Tips to Prepare

First, check out the company’s website

Seems like a no-brainer, right? In fact, there’s really no excuse for NOT checking out the company’s website before your interview.

What can you learn there and what should you be looking for?

Look for what makes the company unique. The website should come right out and tell you, especially if you visit the About Us page or read the mission statement. How are they different from competitors? By arming yourself with easy-to-find background information, you’ll avoid asking questions during the interview that you could have easily found beforehand.

Also, read any corporate blogs. Here you can learn what’s new, what it’s like to work at the company, causes they support, and any recent success they’ve had. All good things to bring up!

Visit social media

Your first stop is LinkedIn. While there, look for information similar to what you’d find on their company blog. What do you have in common and what causes do you both hold near and dear?

Scroll to the bottom of the company page and look for Other Companies People Viewed to discover any competitors. It’s a good idea to have an understanding of who the major companies are in the field.

Another thing you’ll want to do is check out the profiles of the people you’ll be interviewing with. Look for common connections or interests… which are great ways to break the ice during your interview and make a lasting impression.

Next up is Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Here you’ll be looking for clues about company culture, recent projects, possible pain points or anything else that will help you understand the company and how you may be able to help them.

Read what other employees say

Glassdoor is your last stop. Hopefully, you’ll find glowing reviews of the company, but pay attention to all. You may learn about taboo topics that are probably best NOT discussed during your interview.

It’s worth the time you put into it

Preparation makes you look professional and dedicated. Plus, an interview is a two-way street. The more you can learn about a company, the more you’ll know how perfect of a fit it is for you.
