Five Conveyer Belt Safety Tips

When you work in an industrial or warehouse setting, you may find yourself using conveyor belts quite often. They’re helpful for transporting materials used in assembly and other parts of your job. However, like any other type of equipment, it’s important to use conveyor belts properly to keep yourself and your coworkers safe.

Five conveyor belt safety tips

Follow these important safety tips when working with a conveyor belt:

1. Only operate the conveyor belt if you’re authorized to do so. For the best performance of the belt and the safety of all employees, it’s best if someone who’s trained and authorized operates it. This also includes maintenance of the belt to keep it in top shape.
2. Do no sit, stand or walk on the conveyer belt. It’s only meant for transporting items used in your job. The many features of the belt can catch limbs, loose clothing or jewelry, and this can lead to serious injuries.
3. Alert a manager if the belt isn’t operating properly. Like all machines, conveyor belts can run into technical issues from time to time. If a conveyor belt isn’t working right during your shift, let a supervisor or manager know immediately.
4. Keep all loose items away from the belt. Clothing, jewelry and hair can get caught in the belt’s pinch points. To be safe, avoid baggy or untucked clothing; take off all jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, rings, watches, etc.) before your shift; and tie back long hair.
5. Be sure all safety guards are in place. These are needed to keep you safe while using the conveyor belt. Conveyor safety guards contain the moving parts of the belt, with only small openings designed to protect workers from danger zones. Never remove or bypass the safety guards. If they are not in place, do not use the conveyor belt, and alert a member of management.
