The steps you take to onboard new employees helps with a seamless transition into your company. They’ll start out strong from the very beginning, paving the way for successful job performance. In fact, an effective and efficient onboarding process leads to job satisfaction, reduced turnover and increased productivity, which can only help you. So it makes sense to pay careful attention to your onboarding process and adjust it as needed.

Four ways to improve onboarding in your company

By incorporating these four tried-and-true methods, you’ll be sure to enhance your company’s onboarding process:

  1. Go digital. The thought of arriving on the first day to a stack of forms can be daunting. But if you transition forms and paperwork to digital, you can supply them to an employee prior to their first day to review and fill in. This will save time in getting started.
  2. Make it fun. There’s no reason why onboarding needs to be a drab few days of reviewing company policies, electing health care benefits and setting up system access. Instead, you can make it fun and interactive by incorporating games, lunch (go out or order in), happy hour, a corporate gift and more!
  3. Add a personal touch. It’s important that new employees feel included from the start. Have their desk or work area set up and ready to go when they arrive. Be sure a team member is waiting for them by the front desk, and walks them around to make introductions. Provide a contact list of all team members so they know how to get in touch. Every effort you can make to help a new person feel welcome is worth it.
  4. Give insider info. What does a new employee need to know to be successful in their role and with the company? What steps can they take during their first 30 days of employment to get started with a bang? Share all this information with new workers. They’ll understand that you’re invested in their success, and the mystery of how to do a good job will be solved—helping to reduce new-person jitters.
