Developing your career

  • Knowing how to use spreadsheets and databases. Excel, anyone? Having a good grasp on the tools and formulas built into these programs will be a huge advantage when giving presentations to clients. Pivot tables and query design is also helpful to know. You’ll need to get used to the presentation preference of your company to optimize use of your software.
  • Understanding the concept of cost vs. benefit. Also know as the concept of materiality, this is important knowledge to help you make educated decisions and recommendations, even if you don’t have all the information.
  • Are you willing to work hard and inspire others to do the same? Leadership paves the way for teamwork and good communication. It’s helpful in any role, but essential as a financial analyst. Especially if you’re hoping to move into a more senior role.
  • Confidence in decision-making. The people you’re advising want to trust you. After all, the future of their business is in your hands. To set their minds at ease, you’ll need to do all necessary research to ensure your professional consult is what’s best for them.
