If you have recently submitted an application, a phone interview may be included in your hiring process. This type of interview can be more impersonal than a face-to-face interview, so you’ll need to adjust how you handle it. But by following a few key tips, you can give your best-ever interview and impress the hiring manager.

Five ways to ace a phone interview

Since they can’t see your face, an interviewer can’t gauge your reaction and body language. So when you have a phone interview, you can take these important steps to bring you “A game” and do the best possible job:

  1. Choose a designated quiet (and private) interview spot. Pick a room of your home that is low-to-no traffic, and preferably with a door you can close. Tell your family or roommates that you need peace a quiet for a little bit while you take an important phone call. And be sure your pets have already been walked and/or fed so you’ll be sure to minimize interruptions.
  2. Do your research. A phone interview isn’t any less formal than an in-person interview, and you should treat it as such. Look into the company ahead of time by visiting their website and social media to check out what they’ve been up to. If you know the name of your interviewer, Google them to see if you have any interests in common. Read more about the position, the benefits and the company culture. Arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can going into the interview to show how invested you are.
  3. Smile. Even though the interviewer can’t see your face, they can hear it in your voice when you smile. It’s true! So imagine the person is sitting right in front of you and smile as if you were speaking directly to them face-to-face.
  4. Ask questions. You will be given a chance during the interview to ask questions. Always take it. Prepare a list of 3-5 questions ahead of time, and have them written down in front of you so you don’t forget. If you’re not sure what to ask, just do a Google search a choose a few that look good to you.
  5. Charge your phone. And keep your charger nearby if your phone is older and doesn’t hold a charge for long. Don’t let technology get in the way of doing your very best.
