Trying to get ahead? The job market can be competitive, and it helps to have above-and-beyond skills to rise above your competition. Yes, you will need basic qualifications for a job. But certain skills will give you an advantage—when you’re in search of a new job, and when you’re trying to advance at your current job. It’s all about doing your best, proving your value and gaining your boss’s attention.

Four top skills to help you stand out

You’ll have a much easier time getting attention and positive feedback from your boss when you have the following four skills:

  1. Listening. Yes, it’s good to be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing (like in email, for example). But another key element in good communication that you might not have considered is listening. When you listen carefully to your boss, coworkers and customers, you will have a much better idea of what they’re looking for. It will help you deliver tasks more on target and improve your efficiency when you take time to listen.
  2. Teamwork. Sure, you will run into a person here and there with whom you don’t see eye to eye. That’s to be expected. But the key to a harmonious work environment is making every effort to get along with people even though you don’t agree with them. This can be easy in some cases, and in others, you’ll be quite challenged. But it’s important to treat your coworkers with respect and do your best to get along with each other.
  3. Thinking. Jumping to conclusions never benefits anyone. It’s always a good idea to give yourself a little time to weigh your options and make the best decision in your projects at work. It may seem like a good idea to jump in and just get things done, but then you run the risk of making more mistakes. Thinking about your best plan of action will actually help improve your process and help you get things done more accurately and efficiently. It will always help you to have a clear plan.
  4. Time management. At work, you probably have plenty of tasks on your plate. By managing your time, you’ll make the most of your workday to meet your deadlines and keep up with your responsibilities. Time management can involve making a to-do list and working on your most challenging tasks during the time of day when you’re most focused and alert.

Add these skills to your resume

As they are important skills that employers are looking for, add them to the skills section of your resume. List specific examples to help explain how you’ve put the skill to work in your past job experiences.
