Motivated employees work hard for your company. They’ll help you do more, achieve more, attract and retain more clients, and the list goes on and on. As their employer, you are the key to keeping your workers motivated and productive on the job. They’ll respect you and they’ll thrive under your leadership. And the good news is that employee motivation is really quite simple.

Four important and easy ways to motivate your workers

You can encourage your employees to work hard with the following four easy steps:

  1. Communicate what you expect. When your employees understand how to do a good job, it’s easier for them to meet and exceed your expectations. Just the opposite, when they don’t know what you’re measuring them by, it can be very confusing and frustrating, which leads to a lack of motivation. When your employees are new, make it part of the onboarding plan to clearly outline their responsibilities. When they’re assigned new tasks, provide a clear explanation of how to do a good job.
  2. Give regular feedback. Is an employee doing great and should keep up the good work? Or does they have some things they could work on? Whatever the feedback, keep it coming to help your employees do their very best and stay on track. Plan to be in touch with your workers weekly to provide feedback on their performance.
  3. Praise hard work. Say thank you for a job well done! This could be efforts that went above and beyond, finishing a tough project or getting a compliment from a client. Whatever an employee did, be sure to say thank you. This could be by email or in person. You could also formally recognize them in the company newsletter or intranet, or with a special reward.
  4. Discipline when necessary. The opposite of praising hard work is knowing when to discipline employees who aren’t meeting requirements. This provides several advantages. First, it helps you maintain consistency in your workplace. Second, it sets a precedent for those who work hard, showing that it’s valuable to do so, and not recommended to slack off.
