You’re trying to fill a position and you’ve conducted your first round of interviews. Now comes the easy part… right? Not exactly. Choosing between several qualified candidates can be stressful, because you want to be sure you make the right decision for the company. Productivity, synergy, teamwork and workflow all hinge on you making the right decision.

Post interview evaluations

It helps to have a predetermined list of important qualifications you can use to compare each candidate and make sure you’re looking at “apples to apples.” It will help you eliminate bias and make the right hiring choice. This process is called a “post-interview evaluation.”

Qualifications to include in your checklist

These are pre-selected and based on what’s most important to your company. They can include everything from education to personality, such as the following:

  • Work experience
  • Job skills
  • Leadership
  • Problem solving
  • Attitude
  • Passion
  • References
  • Body language
  • Capacity for teamwork
  • Fit with company culture

Form your process

Once you know what you’ll rate applicants on, you’ll need to set up your process. Involve the people who interviewed the person, and other key employees (such as heads of the department) to review the scores of applicants based on the list of qualifications. They may wish to be part of follow-up interviews to help narrow down the right candidate.

Avoid bias

You can remove bias from your choice based on answers you ask during your interviews. Be sure to ask all applicants the same questions so you can easily compare their answers. Score candidates based on their answers.

Work with a recruiter

When it comes to finding the best-suited candidates for a job, you can make your interview process much easier when you work with a staffing partner. They’ll match you with qualified candidates from the start, and handle some or all of the hiring process. You can be involved as much or as little as you like: handling your own post-interview evaluation, or supplying the agency with key information and qualifications, and letting them handle it. It’s all up to you!
