When you’re looking for a new job, you want to be sure to make the right choice. Getting stuck with a job you don’t like is frustrating, not to mention it’s time-consuming when you decide you’ve made the wrong choice and you’re back to square one.

So, if you’re going to invest the time to find something new, it makes sense to understand the options available to you so you can make the right choice, right from the start.

Understand the differences between job types

If you’re working with a staffing agency to find your next job, you may have the options of permanent, temporary, and temp-to-hire jobs. When you understand the differences between them, you’ll be armed with the knowledge to choose what’s best for your next job.

Permanent jobs and advantages

Permanent placement is traditional job placement. You apply, interview and if you’re offered the job, it’s yours long-term. Permanent placements often come complete with benefits packages, plus you get the peace of mind that you’re all set and won’t need to soon look for another job. With permanent placements, it’s important to ask key questions during your interview so you understand the role and company culture before you accept the job, as you won’t soon be switching to something new (unless you want to).

Temporary jobs and advantages

These are the type of placements people usually associate with staffing agencies. Temp positions are short-term for a specified amount of time, and generally do not come with benefits. However, they do offer several important advantages over other types of work. Let’s say you’re not sure what type of long-term job you’d like and you want to gather some experience to make your decision. A temp job allows you to do this. You’ll be able to add to your work experience while you build up the career history section of your resume and become more marketable to future employers. You’ll be able to network and make connections who may be able to help you along your career path.

Temp-to-hire jobs and advantages

A temp-to-hire job is similar to a temp job, except after the specified length of the assignment, you may have the opportunity to join the company full-time. Employers often choose to bring on temp-to-hire employees as a way to assess their fit for the job before making the offer of full-time work. But as the worker, you also gain the advantage of trying out the job to decide if it’s right for you. Then, if you’re offered the position, you’ll know you’re making the best choice.
