So, you got the job. Congratulations! Starting a new job is a perfect opportunity to establish yourself as a hardworking, talented professional in your field—and there’s nothing like a good first impression. To begin your new job with a bang, you can take steps to do your very best during your first week of work.
Five tips to excel at your new job
You know your stuff, you’re good at what you do and you want everyone (especially your new boss) to know it. That’s easy when you follow these five steps:
Arrive early
It’s a no-brainer: Don’t be late on your first day or during your first week. Things happen from time to time, but when you plan ahead and build up a “time buffer,” you’ll be prepared for set backs like heavy traffic, construction, long lines at the coffee shop, etc. Build more than enough time into your commute to account for the unexpected.
Review all paperwork
On your first day, you’ll have lots of reading to do: tax forms, company policies, job roles, and responsibilities—you name it! Be sure to take the time to read and understand all important paperwork. It will help as you get settled into your new digs.
Make connections
Talk to those around you! As the new person, you’ll be reliant on your co-workers to help you learn your job. Network, learn names and faces and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It can also help to get to know the surrounding area—where should you park, where’s the best place for lunch, and is there anywhere to work out after you punch the clock? The more you learn about people and places near your new job, the more satisfied you’ll be with your employment.
Show your willingness to work hard
Step right up and ask for things to do. You want to learn and grow, and there’s no better time to make this clear than when you first start.
Check in with your employer
Never make your new boss assume you’re getting things done—prove it! If you don’t have regular 1:1 meetings to touch base, schedule something. At the very least, keep in touch through email so your new leader knows you’re organized and on track!
You can do it!
You’ve worked hard to get to this point in your career. Now is the time to show what you can do! The extra steps you take to prove yourself from the beginning will help you get to the inside track that much faster. And who knows where your career will take you?
